China eyes oil extraction oil from Amu River fields

BEIJING (PAN): China has evinced a keen interest in extracting oil and gas from three Amu River field in northern Afghanistan, the presidential spokesman said on Friday.

Aimal Faizi told Pajhwok Afghan in Beijing that China had desired to extract oil and gas from the first, second and third field discovered in the north.

Key oil refinery being constructed in north

KABUL (PAN): An oil refinery, a $700 million (36.3 billion afghanis) project, is being established on the Amu River fields in the country's north, an official said on Sunday.  

The facility would have the capacity to purify 60,000 barrels of oil a day, revealed Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA) chief Wafiullah Iftikhar.

Media reports on oil deal exploration spurned

KABUL CITY (PAN): The Ministry of Mines on Thursday dismissed as baseless media reports that a contract with a Chinese firm on oil exploration at the Amu River basin in northern Sar-i-Pul province was benefiting the company. 

Last year, the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) won a bid for developing the oil blocks near the border with Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. 

Huge contracts awarded to kin of Karzai, aides: ANF

KABUL (PAN): The Afghanistan National Front (ANF) on Wednesday said though the participation of high government officials’ kin in the bidding process was unlawful, yet most mining contracts were awarded to relatives of President Hamid Karzai and his aides.

ANF spokesman Faizullah Zaki told a press conference in Kabul that under Afghanistan’s mines and hydrocarbon laws, relatives of high government officials could not take part in the bidding process for government contracts.

US lawmaker moots probe on Afghan-China oil deal

WASHINGTON (PAN): A prominent American lawmaker, who   was denied entry into Afghanistan yearly this year, Wednesday announced to hold a Congressional hearing into the deal between a Chinese firm and the Afghan government.

Exploration work on oil-gas field in Sar-i-Pul begins

SAR-I-PUL (PAN): A Chinese firm on Sunday launched exploration work on an oil and gas field at the Amu River’s basin in northern Sar-i-Pul province in presence of high-ranking Afghan officials.

Chinese state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) last year won a bid to develop the oil blocks.

First-Vice President Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, ministers of interior, finance and mines, governors of Sar-i-Pul, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces and Chinese ambassador to Kabul attended the ceremony.

Cabinet endorses oil deal with China

KABUL (PAN): Endorsing a deal with China on developing a small oil and gas field in northern Afghanistan, the Cabinet on Tuesday agreed to the creation of a joint working committee to explore energy deposits at the Amu River basin.

Last year, state-run China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) won the first oil deal in Afghanistan after signing a contract with the government to develop the oil-field in Sar-i-Pul province.

Karzai to foes: Protect national interest

KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai, asserting his government’s respect for democratic norms, on Tuesday asked his political opponents to avoid actions that harmed Afghanistan’s national interest.

Governments around the globe had political foes who worked within the framework of different parties, Karzai told a news conference at the Presidential Palace in Kabul. However, he said opposition and ruling parties remained on the same page on issues of national importance.
