Kabul, Moscow agree on deeper economic links

KABUL (PAN): At its second meeting, the Afghan-Russian Joint Economic Commission (JEC) pledged cooperation between the two countries in different spheres, officials said on Tuesday.

The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on facilitating Afghan and foreign airlines to start flights between Kabul and Moscow.

Mining contracts marred by flaws: Shahrani

KABUL (PAN): Many of the 211 mining agreements released in compliance with a recent decree of President Hamid Karzai have legal flaws and technical imperfections, a cabinet minister said on Sunday. 

Addressing a news conference in Kabul, Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani promised no mining contract would be treated as a confidential document in the future and all such document would be placed on the ministry's website.

Astana ready for investment in Afghan mining sector

KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan on Wednesday signed an agreement with Kazakhstan on regular political consultations, with Astana pledging to cooperate with Kabul in different spheres of life.

After signing the accord with his Kazakh counterpart Yerzhan Kazykhanov, Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul said they had held fruitful talks on security and trade cooperation.

MoI asked to ensure security for oil, gas fields

KABUL (PAN): The National Security Council (NSC) on Sunday asked the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to task a 300-member squad with maintaining security for oil and gas fields in the Amu River basin in northern Sar-i-Pul province.

Chaired by President Hamid Karzai, the meeting discussed a security request from state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation International (CNPCI) Chairman Jiang Jiemin.

China eyes gas pipeline via Afghanistan

KABUL (PAN): Beijing wants to build a pipeline transporting natural gas to China from Turkmenistan via Tajikistan and Afghanistan, the Presidential Palace said on Wednesday.

State-run China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Chairman Jiang Jiemin referred to the plan during a meeting with President Hamid Karzai on the sidelines of the 12th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Beijing on Wednesday.

Ministers say they have no right to fix gas prices

KABUL (PAN): Ministers of economy and finance on Tuesday acknowledged they had no authority to control gas prices, but hoped efforts underway in this regard would yield positive results.

Gas prices shot up from 55 afghanis ($1.13) to 80 and 100afs per kilogram in capital Kabul after the EidulAdha festival, worrying residents. The current price of a kilogram of gas is about 70afs.
