KABUL CITY (PAN): The Attorney General Office (AGO) said Gen. Rashid Dostum could face death sentence or jailed for life, if allegations that he was blocking exploration of oil and gas in the Amu River basin were proven true.
On Sunday, Dostum, leader of the Junbish-i-Millie Party, was accused of undermining oil and gas explorations in the Amu River basin -- forcing the National Security Council (NSC) to refer him to the AGO as traitor to the nation.
KABUL (PAN): The National Security Council (NSC) on Sunday asked the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to task a 300-member squad with maintaining security for oil and gas fields in the Amu River basin in northern Sar-i-Pul province.
Chaired by President Hamid Karzai, the meeting discussed a security request from state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation International (CNPCI) Chairman Jiang Jiemin.
KABUL (PAN): Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani on Tuesday alleged some neighbouring countries were threatening mega mine projects in order to impede Afghanistan’s economic revival.
"History shows that the enemies of Afghanistan have always tried to block fruitful projects and economic development of the country," Shahrani told a news conference in Kabul.
KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan and China on Wednesday signed their first-ever oil and gas deal that would earn the landlocked country $7 billion over the next two decades and a half, officials said.
Under the major oil exploration agreement, the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) will develop three oil fields along the Amu River in northern Sar-i-Pul and Faryab provinces.

Chairing a Cabinet meeting, President Hamid Karzai directed Minister of Mines WahidullahShahrani to finalise the deal with the government-controlled Chinese firm.
