Tankers with 70,000 litres of fuel gutted

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): About 70,000 litres of fuel were torched on Wednesday as a result of a blaze at the Aqina port in northwestern Faryab province, bordering Turkmenistan, an official said.

The fire broke out due to a short circuit of a generator transferring fuel from one tanker to another at 8:30am. The blaze was extinguished by firefighters after an hour and a half.

Samangan coalmine blast toll soars to 20

AIBAK (Pajhwok): The bodies of 20 people were pulled out following an explosion in a coalmine tunnel in the Dar-i-SaufBala district of northern Samangan province on Wednesday, residents said.

Abdul Khaliq, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News based on information from residents of the area the death toll had risen from 12 to 20 people.

With the precise source of information still unknown, he said that a team had been dispatched to from the district centre the blast site determine casualty figures.

1 dead, 6 injured in Jalalabad cylinder blast

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): One person was killed and six others wounded on Friday when a cylinder exploded in a hotel in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said.

Brig. Gen. Fazal Ahmad Sherzad, provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the cylinder blast occurred at around 9: 00am in the kitchen of Salar Hotel in the city.

All the victims were employees of the hotel, he added. Shah Sawar, owner of the hotel, said it was a heavy blast which damaged parts of the hotel.

Coal gas kills 3 boys at Helmand mosque

LASHKARGAH (PAN): Coal gas has killed three people and wounded a fourth at a mosque in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Wednesday.

Aged 12-16, the victims were seminary students, who burnt coal to warm their room, the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the boys had forgotten pouring water on the coal before going to sleep. The injured student is reportedly in a coma.

6 of a family burnt to death in Helmand

LASHKARGAH (PAN): Six people of a family have been burnt to death in a blaze caused by petrol in southern Helmand province, health officials said on Thursday.

Dr. Nisar Ahmad Barak, the Bost Hospital head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident happened in Bust Qala locality last night when a woman was washing a turbine with petrol.

Petrol caught fire that spread to a nearby gas cylinder, killing three people on the spot, he said, adding three others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Tirinkot seminary fire injures 11 students

TIRINKOT (PAN): Nearly a dozen students were injured as a result of a seminary fire in Tirinkot, the capital of central Uruzgan province, on Sunday.

Dr Yad Wali of the Uruzgan Civil Hospital confirmed receiving 11 injured students from the religious school, where the fire was caused by a gas cylinder at 12.00 noon.

He said the students with burn injuries -- aged 5-12 years -- were under treatment. Three of the children were in critical condition, he added.

Dozens of shops gutted by Jalalabad fire

JALALABAD (PAN): Dozens of shots were gutted and a man wounded on Friday as a result of a blaze and an explosion in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

The fire broke out at a location between the Mia Aslam Market and the Department of Information and Culture at 12 noon, an official said.

Deputy Governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News the blaze was triggered by a gas cylinder inside a shot in the area.

Poisonous gas in water well kills 3 of a family

LASHKARGAH (PAN): Three members of a family died after inhaling a poisonous gas and smoke produced by a power generator the family used to fetch water from a well in their home in southern Helmand province, officials said on Monday.

The deaths in Lashkargah's Baba Jee area occurred on Sunday when a girl descended the small well to turn off the generator, but she died after inhaling the poisonous  gas accumulated in the well, the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zhwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Balkh gas cylinder blast kills child

MAZARISHARIF (PAN): A child was killed and six others were injured when a gas cylinder exploded in northern Balkh province, an official said on Tuesday.   

The overnight blast took place in the Baba Yagar area of the provincial capital, killing a 4-year-old child, zonal hospital director, Dr. Anwari, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the injured included a man, his wife and four children, whose condition was unstable.  The cylinder exploded after being placed on a stove for heating.

2 die in Mazar-i-Sharif cylinder blast

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): At least two people died and 10 others sustained injuries when a gas cylinder exploded in northern Balkh province on Wednesday.

The blast in the second district of Mazar-i-Sharif occurred at an under-reconstruction house around 1:00pm, the provincial deputy police chief said.

Abdur Rauf Taj told Pajhwok Afghan News two workers were killed on the spot and 10 others wounded, including children. One of the wounded was in critical condition, he said.
