KABUL (Pajhwok): After developing cold feet over the proposed $10.8 billion steel Hajigak iron ore mine project in Afghanistan, conceived in November 2011, the SAIL-led consortium of leading Indian steelmakers has now decided to scrap the project altogether, Indian media reports.
The Financial Express reports that an inter-ministerial group is learnt to have come to the conclusion at its latest meeting that it would be prudent not to pursue the project.
KABUL (PAN): A Ministry of Mines and Petroleum official on Wednesday said talks with Indian officials on the Hajigak iron ore mine project were underway and many issues had been resolved during the parleys.
Mohammad Rafi Rafiq Saddique, the ministry spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Afghanistan and the Indian consortium, a group of six Indian companies the Afghan Iron and Steel Consortium led by Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) had agreed on many issues.

Located in central Bamyan province, the Hajigak mine contains an estimated 1.8 billion tonnes of ore, with an iron concentration of 62 percent. The figures are based on a survey conducted more than 50 years ago.

The mine in central Bamyan province, which is estimated to hold 1.8 billion tonnes of high-quality iron ore deposits, was discovered around 50 years ago.
KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan has awarded the rights to develop four blocks at the Hajigak iron ore mine to a group of Indian firms and a Canadian company, the mines ministry said on Tuesday.
The rights of B, C and D blocks have been given to the AFISCO -- an Indian consortium of seven companies, led by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), and a fourth block called "A" to Canada's Kilo Goldmines Ltd, the Ministry of Mines said.
BAMYAN CITY (PAN): With the creation of several check-posts and deployment of 1,700 personal, security would improve around the Hajigak iron-ore mine in central Bamyan province, officials said on Sunday.
The mine in Shibar district would be awarded for excavation to an international company in a month, Jawad Omar, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Mines, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
KABUL (PAN): The minister for mines said on Tuesday private companies would be allowed to extract iron ores from deposits in the central Bamyan province on the basis of a transparent bidding process.
Eng. Muhammad Ibrahim Adel told a press conference here that different zones had been explored for iron-ore extraction. Nine private companies including Indian, Chinese, British, Pakistani and two Afghan firms have evinced an interest in attending the bidding.
