Iran ready to export gas to Afghanistan

Category:

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Iran is ready to export its natural gas to Afghanistan through laying a pipeline under an agreement between the two countries, an Iranian diplomat said on Monday.

Mahmud Afkhami Rashedi, the Iranian Consul General in western Herat province, said his country was ready to start laying the pipe and export gas into Herat. He said Herat residents would benefit from gas, which was environmental-friendly and would develop local industry and improve peoples’ economy.

Rashedi said a contract on power supply from Iran to Afghanistan had been signed and the payment done. “According to the agreement with Afghanistan, Iran will provide 60 megawatts of electricity to Herat within the next six months.”

About the Iran-Herat railroad project, completion of the 192km Khaf-Herat railway, he said the road had been divided into four parts. Iran was responsible to build three parts of the road and Afghanistan one part. Iran has completed its portions, but Afghanistan was yet to start work on its part.

He said more than 50,000 visas were issued to Afghans by the consulate during the past 10 months.
