Cabinet OKs agreement on fuel exploration

KABUL (PAN): The Council of Ministers on Monday approved an agreement with three companies for fuel exploration and production at the Afghan-Tajik basin in the north.

Afghanistan is expected to earn $16 billion from exploitation of the oil and gas reserves over the next 25 years, according to the Ministry of Mines.  

At a meeting chaired by President Hamid Karzai, the Cabinet discussed the agreement with the Turkish company TAPO, Kuwaiti firm Dragon Oil and the Ghazanfar Group of Afghanistan.

Contracts can't be signed pending law approval

KABUL (PAN): A Ministry of Mines official said on Saturday contracts for the development of four key minefields could not be signed, pending parliamentary approval of a draft law.

Preliminary work on local and foreign investment in the mines in northeastern, northern, central and southern parts of the country had been completed, an advisor to the Ministry of Mines, Mohammad Asif Frozan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

India renews commitment to gas project

 KABUL (PAN): India has reiterated its strong commitment to the execution of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project by 2017, a media report said on Wednesday.

President Parnab Mukherjee held out the commitment at a meeting with Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Rashid Meredov in New Delhi, the Times of India reported.

Canadians surveying Herat gas reserves

HERAT CITY (PAN): Canadian experts have launched a survey based on satellite images to assess gas reserves in northern parts of western Herat province, an official said on Wednesday.

The reserves were found in Kashk-i-Kohna, Rabat Sangi and Gulran districts, bordering Turkmenistan and Iran, the governor's spokesman, Mohiuddin Noori, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Iron processing factory opens in Herat

HERAT CITY (PAN): A massive iron processing and melting factory, an $8 million private sector project, was inaugurated on Tuesday at the industrial park in western Herat province, officials said.

Commerce and Industries Minister Anwarul Haq Ahadi, Economic Minister Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, Herat Governor Daud Shah Saba and industrialists attended the inauguration ceremony.
