Work halted at 32 coalmines in Samangan

AIBAK (PAN): Extraction work has been halted at nearly 32 coalmine tunnels due to the fear of collapse in Dara-i-Souf district of northern Samangan province, officials said on Thursday.

A technical team ordered the mines closed after an investigation revealed that the tunnels had not been professionally drilled and dug by local workers, deputy head of coal enterprises, Eng. Ali Madad, said.

Security no more a problem for Samangan coalmines

AIBAK (PAN): A major security problem facing coalmines in central Afghanistan has been resolved with the surrender of an anti-government group in the area, officials said on Sunday.

"Up to 20 gunmen who controlled and excavated coal from mines in inaccessible Gula and Hesar areas of Dara-i-SaufPayeen district until two weeks back," the Samangan provincial council chief said.

Dr. Ziauddin told Pajhwok Afghan News security was no longer a problem as the group, equipped with heavy weapons, had surrendered.

Green light given to coal transportation in Samangan

AIBAK (PAN): Authorities in northern Samangan province on Tuesday gave a green light to the transportation of coal from a mine in Darra-i-SaufPayan district after a counterinsurgency operation.

Eleven militants, including a commander, were killed in the offensive that began March 11, deputy police chief, Lt. Col. MussadiqullahMuzafari, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

600,000 tons of coal to be extracted

AIBAK (PAN): The government has reached a 10-year agreement with a private firm for extracting 600,000 tonnes of coal from a recently discovered mine in northern Samangan province, an official said on Wednesday.

The agreement signed with Misaq-i-Mashriq, a private mining company for extraction, to dig out coal from the newly discovered coal mine in Rao-i-Dawab district, public relations official, Mohammad Kabir Mukarramzada, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Illegal mining of coal in Kulfgan district of Takhar province

KUNDUZ, April 25, 2005 (Pajhwok Afghan News) – Illegal mining of coal continues in the northern province of Takhar despite directions to the provincial government to put an end to it, according to Engineer Mohammed Ali Madad, director of government coal enterprise of northeast zone. Madad told Pajhwok Afghan News that though they sent a formal application to the Governor's office in Takhar to stop illegal mining from the coal mine in Kizistan of Kulfgan district of Takhar province, the illegal mining continued.
