Mineral resources of Laghman province

Laghman is one of strategically important provinces located in the country’s eastern zone. The province is bordering Badakhshan, Nangarhar and Kabul in north, Kunar in east and Kabul and Kapisa provinces in west.

 

Being a mountainous province, the province has four districts such as of Qarghayee, Alingar, Alishing and Daulat Shah.

 

Having historical importance, the province has abundant mineral resources, but unfortunately there were no credible information about the quantity of its mines due to poor cooperation of provincial mining department.

 

The province comprises following mineral riches as per the list dispatched to Pajhwok Afghan News by the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

 

Berylliummines:

 

According to ministry of mines and petroleum, this mine is located in Mandol area of the province. The mine was detected in 1974.Similar, beryllium mines were also found in Dara-i-Noor area and other parts of Laghman that had been detected in 1974.

 

Lithiummines:

 

Lithium mines are located in Alingar district of Laghman. Measuring six square kilometers area, this mine was detected in 1974. But further information about the mine is yet to be ascertained.

 

The ministry revealed another mines of lithium is also available in Shkamt area of the province. Comprising 158,000 tons of minerals, the mine was detected in 1974.

 

According to ministry of mines and petroleum, so far no lithium mine could be set for bidding process.

 

 

 

Tantalumand Niobium:

 

This mine is located in Niloi area of the province. The ministry of mines and petroleum said the mine has 1.5 metres thickness and 1.7 metres length and was detected between 1974 and 1977.

 

Dr. NaqibullahSahak, lecturer at geology faculty of polytechnic faculty of Kabul, said three types of minerals of pegmatite vessels were seen in the mine. The ministry concerned has no strategy for extraction of mine.

 

According to the ministry, another tantalum and niobium mine was available in Shkamt area of Laghman, which was detected in 1974. However, further information about the mine was yet to be revealed.

 

Berylliummine:

 

This mine is also located in Nilo or Nilaw area of Laghman province and was detected in 1974.

 

Dr. NaqibullahSahak wrote in his book that more than 40 pegmatite vessels have been discovered in this mine. He put the length of the mineral vessels between ten to hundreds of metres and its thickness up to three metres. 

 

According to ministry of mines, another mine of beryllium was also available in Mandol area of Laghman. It was detected in 1974.
