Miscreants out to jeopardise Aynak cooper mine project

Category:

KABUL (PAN): Mines Minister Wahidullah Shahrani on Sunday informed a National Security Council (SSC) meeting at the Presidential Palace in Kabul that some armed groups were out to disrupt extraction efforts at the Ainak copper mine in central Logar province.

A statement from Karzai’s office said the issue raised by Shahrani was discussed at the meeting chaired by President Karzai.

The meeting discussed security for mine projects and the situation in eastern Nuristan province, where militants crossing the border from Pakistan had recently attacked security posts.

Shahrani presented his ministry’s report on security threats hampering works at the cooper mine and asked security departments to take necessary measures for the safety of workers.

The meeting tasked defence, interior ministries and the intelligence service with ensuring security for the Ainak copper mine project and identifying the individuals creating problems in this regard.

The NSC also asked people to cooperate with government in keeping security for welfare projects. It also discussed rocket attacks from Pakistan into some districts in eastern Nuristan province.

The council decided that troops recently sent to the province would remain there, asking finance and public works ministries to start work on a road linking Kamdish district with Kordish area.
