BAMYAN CITY (PAN): The collapse of 54 holes in a coalmine has rendered 3,000 miners jobless in central Bamyan province, an official said on Wednesday.
Incidents of collapse in the mine in Kohmard district started last week, leading the authorities to stop extraction work to prevent possible fatalities, police said.
"The work will not resume until further orders from the Ministry of Mines," police spokesman Ahmad Ali Yarzada said.
A miner, Ramazan, hailing from western Ghor province, said the mine closure had left him jobless and he was unable to feed his family.
The deputy head of coal enterprises, Ali Madad, linked the incidents to unprofessional extraction. About the unemployed miners, he said they could work under professional engineers at the mine.
The Kohmard district chief said 90 percent of coal was extracted in an unprofessional way. The mine played a key role in government's revenue and its closure would have a bad impact on the income, he said.
Ministry of Mines spokesman Jawad Omar, however, said the ministry planned to start professional extraction of coal in the near future.
On December 24, 11 people were killed when a fire erupted inside a coalmine in northern Baghlan province. The fire breakout was linked to amateurish extraction of the mine, said the Nehrin district chief, Fazal Rahman.
